Bohemian Traders Loves // Floral Ice Cubes

Spring is in full swing and to celebrate the occasion Bohemian Traders have picked the last of our winter blooms to put together a sweet DIY for you. Freezing flowers in ice is the perfect finishing touch to a spring or summer soiree, and with a myriad of edible flowers to choose from you may not have to venture far from your own garden.

Using edible flowers to make delicate and beautiful ice cubes is a great way to decorate glasses and add a pop of colour to your event. Before you begin it’s important to know what flowers are considered edible – there are many lists available on the internet but some of our favourite edible flowers are:

Orchids – Available all year round orchids have a fresh and crisp flavour.

Pansies – Best available through the cooler months of Autumn to Spring pansies have a slightly grassy taste.

Marigold – With a tangy citrus flavour marigolds are available throughout Autumn to Spring.

Lavender – Available all year round, the sweet taste of lavender is one that has been used often.

 

What you will need:

Ice cube tray – the larger the ice cube tray the longer your ice cubes will last.

Edible flowers – your choice of flower.

Water – for the best way of achieving clear ice cubes, see our tips below.

 

Tips and tricks:

For the best results try using larger ice cube trays – you can choose to use silicone molds, to make releasing the ice a breeze.

To achieve clearer ice, try using processed distilled water. This should prevent imperfections such as bubbles and cracks.

In order to suspend the flowers in the ice fill your tray in layers, freezing in between.

 

Method:

  1. Prepare water.
    • Bring water to a boil and boil for 2-3 minutes, then allow it to cool completely before freezing.
    • If you are not using distilled water, decant water into a jug or carafe for ease of pouring.
  2. Fill each of the molds in the ice cube tray 1/4 of the way, placing a flower face down into the water and place in freezer for 1-2 hours (or until solid).
  3. Remove the ice cube tray from the freezer and fill to half way, placing another flower in the mold. Freeze for a further 1-2 hours (or until solid).
  4. Remove the ice cube tray from the freezer and fill the remaining space in the molds. Freeze for 3-4 hours, or until ready to serve.

 

Once they are set, serve your ice cubes in sweet vintage glasses with your choice of beverage.

 

Although this is not the quickest of processes, it is a great way to add a pop of colour to your soiree’s this spring, or a simple and fun DIY to complete with your children.
